Carinthia is blessed with many stunning options, including the Nockalmstrasse with 34km of roads through the EU’s only Biosphere park, and the Villacher Alpenstrasse that offers panoramic views of Carinthia.  The Malta Hochalmstrasse route winds through the valley of waterfalls, ending at Austria’s highest concrete dam – beautiful views combined with a fascinating insight into Austria’s pioneering approach to energy creation.

Many of the local mountain ranges have cable cars that run for most of the year and have one or more stops from which it’s possible to walk through the mountain forests before returning down the mountain.  You may even want to walk or cycle back down if you’re feeling very keen!  Try Bad Kleinkirchheim, Goldeck, Weissensee, Turracher Hohe or Ankogel, amongst many others.  The Molltaler Gletscher (glacier) offers skiing nearly all year for those that can’t wait for the winter!  Austria’s tallest mountain, the Grossglockner, lies 130km or 2.5 hours from Haus Claxton.  Slightly further afield but the mountain road leading to the top has to be experienced to be believed, as this link will show you – https://www.grossglockner.at
