The nearby picturesque towns of Millstatt and Spittal are well worth exploring, both offering beautiful walks and several historic buildings, and both also have an impressive selection of cafes and restaurants.  The larger town of Villach lies around 20km away, along the banks of the River Drau, offering shops and more history, with the old town centre based around a beautiful cobbled square.  If you’re going to Villach our personal favourite is a visit to Landskron Castle (middle picture) just outside of the town – the castle is a ruin which is home to a birds of prey sanctuary.  It’s open during the summer and runs displays several times a day – a fantastic sight.

The capital town of Carinthia is Klagenfurt (left picture), just one hour away, and also well worth visiting as a beautiful city of culture and great shopping.  Approximately 1.5 hours north-west is Lienz, based at the foot of the breath-taking Dolomites.

Salzburg (right picture) is an easy motorway drive 2 hours north - we recommend switching the satnav setting to "avoid motorways", though, and discovering yet more of the beautiful mountain scenery and village life just off the beaten track!  Whilst you’re exploring be sure to visit the castle, and it’s also worthwhile paying a visit to the salt mines at Hallein on the way.  Wrap up warm for the mines, and be sure to try out the underground slides, great fun!
