Carinthia is a great choice for skiing and other winter sports, with many excellent resorts in the region.  The closest (15 minutes drive) is Bad Kleinkirchheim (BKK), but we also love Turracher Hohe, Gerlitzen, Katschberg, and Goldeck.  It may be worth purchasing a ski pass that can be used across 31 resorts in Carinthia and the Eastern Tyrol – check www.topskipass.at to find out more about this.  If you need tuition there is a great choice available in all the large resorts – we can particularly recommend http://www.skischool-bkk.com/snowboard/adults-courses.html.  It’s also worth checking this website, https://www.bergfex.com/kaernten/top10/, for weather forecasts across the regions resorts.
